Ready, Set, C25k

Taking your first steps into running can be intimating, but one of the best ways to ease yourself into the running habit is to start with the popular C25k programme.

Whether you have signed up to your local C25k, or are just thinking about it, here are some helpful tips to help you through:

  • Invest in a good pair of running shoes, it is advisable to have gait analysis done before buying a pair as you want to make sure you are wearing the right type of shoe for you.

  • Remember to warm up and cooldown after you run.

  • Always take rest days no matter how good you feel.

  • It is normal to feel a bit sore when you start exercising again, but this should not be prolonged or severe. If it is please seek medical or physio advice if it persists.

  • Try to run on different surfaces eg. trail, grass, pavement.

  • Tell someone what your running goal is, doing this will keep you accountable to someone you know and keep you motivated.

  • Keep a running/exercise diary, this is nice to look back on and track your progress.

  • Don’t go too fast when starting out running, keep an even steady pace.

  • Don’t compare yourself to others.

  • Don’t worry if you have a bad day, it happens to everyone. Just don’t give up, seek support from your coach or group leader.

  • Keep hydrated, even on cold days.

  • Break each session down into small chunks, either time or distance.

  • Set achievable goals and reward yourself when you get there!
